“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
